About The Bursary

The bursary scheme forms part of Astron Energy's commitment to skills development, meaningful socio-economic transformation, and the country’s broader development agenda. 

The sponsorship is a full-cost bursary that covers the following: 

  1. Full bursaries to attend ANY registered higher education institution
  2. Tuition fees, textbooks, accommodation,
  3. Food and monthly stipends,
  4. Light-touch mentorship for developing essential skills imperative for personal and professional growth.  
  5. On-going psycho-social support provided by Excel@Uni 
  6. Work Readiness Programme
  7. Academic Support in the form of private tutoring

 

To Qualify: You need to be studying a qualification in one of these Engineering Streams: Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering (Light and Heavy Current), Metallurgical Engineering, Industrial Engineering [Must be BSc or BEng, NOT BEng Tech]

  • OBLIGATIONS: You are obligated to work-back for every year of funding provided by the bursary, otherwise you may have to refund the value of the bursary benefits recieved (plus interest charges). 
  • Any applicant or awardee later revealed to not be studying full-time or having paid employment; will have their bursary contract/offer terminated and required to refund all benefits paid to them by the bursary. 
  • If you have not heard back from us by 31 January 2026, please consider your application unsuccessfull. 

Who Can Apply

  1. Applicants must be South African Citizens, under 35 years of age.   
  2. Applicants must be pursuing a FULL-TIME qualification (Degree, Honors, Masters, Etc) 
    • The following qualification levels DO NOT QUALIFY: Diploma & Advanced Diploma
  3. If Applicant's parent/guardian is NOT AN Astron Energy employee:
    1. They must be studying the FINAL-YEAR of their qualification in 2026 (or doing a 1-year postgrad qualification in 2026)
  4. If Applicant's parent/guardian IS AN Astron Energy employee:
    1. They qualify to apply for the bursaru if they are in matric or gap-year in 2025; OR studying anywhere from 1st to final-YEAR of their qualification in 2026
  5. Applicants must be pursuing their qualification-level for the first time (ie, not repeating a degree, honours, etc)
  6. Applicants must be pursuing a qualification or intending to pursue a qualification at any tertiary institution registered with DHET and SAQA. (This includes private/community colleges and TVETS) 
  7. Average academic performance for the last full academic year must be 70% or higher

  1. Engineering Streams: Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering (Light and Heavy Current), Metallurgical Engineering, Industrial Engineering [Must be in the Science or Engineering factulties, NOT BEng Tech] 
  2. ICT Streams: Information Management, Data Engineering, Data Analytics, Data Architecture Data Science and Analytics (preference will be for Science and Engineering faculties, but all are welcome to apply)

    • 2026 Astron Energy Bursary will be allocated for the 2026 academic year

Please prepare the following documents:

    Important Note About Documents:  

  • All certified documents must be less than 3 months old.

    1. Certified copy of a valid South African identity document 
    2. A 1-2 page statement - Motivation for why you should be selected for this bursary
    3. Recent certified Parents/Guardian SA ID or Death Certificate (or death certificate if deceased) [*]

    Current Tertiary Student (Undergrad/Honours/Masters enrolled in 2025)- FINAL-YEAR 2026

    1. Certified Full Tertiary Academic Records (for all years of tertiary study, even if at multiple institutions) [*] [or police affidavit stating why the student wasn't schooling] 
    2. Certified copy of latest/June 2025 Official Academic Transcripts (or official institution report) [or police affidavit stating why the student wasn't schooling]
    3. Certified copy of valid matric certificate (Grade 12) 
    4. 2025 Official University Fee Statements- If you have off-campus accommodation, please include your lease agreement [*] 
    5. Certified Copy of 2025 Proof of Registration (if studying in 2025)  [or police affidavit stating why the student wasn't schooling]

     

    Tertiary Gap Year Student (Enrolled prior to 2025)- FINAL-YEAR 2026

    1. Certified copy of valid matric certificate (Grade 12) 
    2. IF APPLICABLE- Certified copy of the latest Official academic transcript/s [*]  [or police affidavit stating why you were not schooling]

     

    Masters & PHD Applicants must submit (FINAL-YEAR 2026)

    1. Recommendation letter by Supervisor (Compulsory for master’s and doctoral applicants)

    2. IF APPLICABLE- If Applicant is disabled? Submit Dept. of Labour Employment Equity Act (EEA1) Form AND a Doctors’ Letter [*]   
    3. IF APPLICABLE- A copy of 2026 acceptance letter from an accredited institution. - Official letter showing you've been accepted (even provisionally) to study the qualification in 2026 [*] 

     

    If Applicants are Shortlisted to Provisional-Acceptance

    1. Latest (2025 end-of-year) Academic Results
    2. 2026 Proof of Registration at the institution (NB: The bursary will only be awarded after you have registered, so please make sure you have the funds to register at the beginning of the year. This will be 1 of the conditions of your provisional acceptance) 

For applicants under the age of 18, to comply with POPI regulations a signed consent form completed by your parent/legal guardian along with a certified copy of their proof of identity is required.
